It’s a well-known fact that Chinese people love to get involved in any commotion. And because of my curiosity, I found myself unintentionally caught up in an astonishing missing persons case that had been unsolved for more than a decade.
I was squeezing through the crowd, watching as a 40-meter-high smokestack was blown up. There was a loud boom, the ground shook, and as dust and debris flew into the air, I felt something roll at my feet. I looked down, and my scalp went numb—it was a human skull.

On a large blue plastic tarp, a small skeleton was pieced together, and among the stacked evidence bags, I noticed a broken toy doll head. The shock hit me like a tidal wave, and childhood memories seemed to come rushing back.
